Data-Driven Approaches for Modeling and Control of Unsteady Fluid Systems 24.6.2026 – 10:15 > 11:00 Speaker Isabel Scherl joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department in January 2025 where she leads the Data-Driven Fluids Group. Prior to UMass, she was a postdoctoral scholar in Mechanical and Civil Engineering at Caltech in the Computational and Data-Driven Fluid Dynamics group.  Her postdoctoral work used data assimilation techniques for turbulence modeling. She completed her PhD at the University of Washington in mechanical engineering. Her graduate research augmented experimental fluid mechanics with machine learning. Specifically, she focused on data-driven modeling, control, and optimization of vertical axis turbine arrays. Before joining the Virginia Tech AOE faculty in 2023, he was an associate professor at Lehigh University and previously held the postdoctoral appointments of NRC Research Associate at the Air Force Research Laboratory and NSF International Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge. He is an AIAA Associate Fellow, Fellow of ASME and of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and is a recipient of an AFOSR Young Investigator Award and an NSF CAREER Award.
